DMPS is well-known for being one of the nation’s leading school districts when it comes to energy efficiency. That legacy continues as a solar-powered hot water system has recently been installed at Wright Elementary School. The school’s system is the first of what will be a growing number across the district, another step forward in being cost efficient and environmentally friendly. The renowned dance troupe Pilobolus is in town for a performance at the Civic Center. But dancers took to a smaller stage at Wright Elementary School, helping to incorporate the art of movement with school lessons. DMPS is offering no-cost meals to every student at Wright Elementary, and 36 other schools, during the 2015-16 school year. The U.S.D.A.’s Community Eligibility Provision helps schools that predominantly serve low-income children to offer free, nutritious school meals to all students through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. DMPS is pleased to announce Moulton and Wright elementary schools will have new principals on July 1. Eric Van Dorin will take over at Moulton and Michelle Hurlburt will be principal at Wright. Both have roots in Des Moines schools. Long before she earned her masters, Hurlburt graduated from Lincoln High School. To read more about both of them, click on the headline.
DMPS will again offer breakfast and lunch over the summer months to children 18 and younger. The number of sites has grown, and so have the number of meals served. Last summer, DMPS staff fed children 28,722 breakfasts and 79,698 lunches. DMPS has sponsored a summer meal program for more than 30 years.
