New Playground

KaBOOM!, a non-profit organization helping to build playgrounds throughout the United States, and Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s Let’s Play! initiative offered the Wright Elementary community a chance to design and build a brand-new playground! For eight weeks, students, parents, staff and community members planned for Wright’s Build Day, June 9, 2011. The students drew pictures of their “dream playgrounds,” complete with roller coasters and waterslides. Parents and teachers, then captured the common themes of each child’s wishes: rock walls, tornado slides, climbing structures, noise makers, and bright colors to create our perfect custom design.

On June 9, over 200 community volunteers partnered with Dr Pepper Snapple Group to build the playground, a stage area, picnic tables and gardens. Despite the lightning, thunder and rain… for much of the day… a dedicated group of individuals worked together to accomplish the goal.

In addition to the playground structure, Dr Pepper Snapple also provided Wright with Imagination Playground in a Box. Large, tinker-toy-like, foam blocks offer children imaginative, creative free play opportunities. Students are able to construct whatever they dream independently or collaboratively! This will be utilized indoors during the winter months.
